My Passion For Sports Rehab
I am passionate about the field of physical rehabilitation since I graduated Brooklyn College in 1970. I was introduced to this profession by my brother-in-law Dr. Fred Liswood. He was a practicing podiatry surgeon in Brooklyn, NY. When I approached him about his thoughts on a professional career for myself he said you must check out the field of physical therapy. I made appointments to speak with physical therapists and observe their private practices. I went to physical therapy departments in major hospitals to get an idea of the type of patients treated in the hospital. From visiting private practices and hospital departments I developed a love for the profession and decided to pursue a career.
I was accepted into the College of Physicians and Surgeons Columbia University’s School of Physical Therapy in September 1970 and graduated from the program in 1972 with a Certificate in Physical Therapy. My first position was a staff physical therapist at Long Island Jewish Hospital in New Hyde Park, NY and a home care physical therapist for Booth Memorial Hospital in Queens, NY.
I opened my first private office in March 1975 with two partners under the corporate name of Zimmerman, Cooperman & Gerson RPT PC. The office was located in Fresh Meadows, Queens.
In 1983 we opened our second facility in NYC under the corporate name of Gramercy Park Physical Therapy Associates PC. The practices were sold in April 2012. I have been licensed by the State of New York since March 1974. I worked for RAS Medical Systems selling physical therapy & chiropractic equipment from 2013 through 2015.
My specialty in practice was mostly related to sports related injuries, post operative rehabilitation, acute and chronic pain syndromes. One of the highlights of my career was performing disability evaluations for the New City Transit Authority to assess applicants for the Assess-A-Ride program. These evaluations were performed to determine the eligibility of applicants to receive free transportation to their doctors for medical care. This was one of the first programs of its kind in the nation and i was proud to be an evaluator for the city.
I have had the pleasure to have worked very closely with top orthopedic, neurosurgeons and podiatric surgeons throughout NYC. I have received referrals from well known hospitals such as Beth Israel Medical Center, New York University, Columbia Presbyterian and Hospital for Joint Diseases. Practicing in New York City also gave me the opportunity to treat celebrities, politicians and sports figures on a weekly basis. I truly enjoyed my career in physical therapy and found the work to be truly rewarding.
The Bigger Picture
In my personal life I enjoy being with my family and friends, playing tennis and working out in a fitness center. I enjoy going to the movies, theatre, sporting events and especially eating in fine restaurants.
